In a modern world of today no country can even imagine to develop, prosper without inclusion and support of women. Women are integral, inseparable part of any society and it is the duty of policy makers to encourage, facilitate and invest in women, give them dignified status, protect them to encourage their active participation in country’s development.

Russia’s story of progress, development and prosperity is incomplete without mentioning the participation of women.

Russia has made a women friendly policy and has given equal rights to them and they are participating in country’s progress, development and prosperity without any fear. The literacy rate among women is very close to 100 %. About 37% of women hold higher degree as compare to 29% of man.

The role of women in Russian society has evolved significantly over centuries, shaped by historical events, cultural traditions, and social transformations. Modern women have increasingly embraced education, entrepreneurship, participation in decision making, defence, commerce, and on merit basis they reached at the leadership level.

Today, Russian women are playing a dynamic role in reshaping their society with a balance both having a strong family as well as leading at the top of helm of affairs. Exciting field are ranging from business and politics to science and technology, arts and music, creativity and inventions. The presence of strong, influential women in Russian history such as Catherine the Great, Anna Akhmatova, and Valentina Tereshkov serves as a testament to the resilience and capabilities of Russian women through the ages.

Before the Russian Revolution of 1917, women in Russia were largely confined to domestic roles, responsible for raising children, managing households, and supporting their husbands. Women were often educated in literature, music, and etiquette but had limited independence.

The Soviet Union drastically changed the status of women, emphasizing gender equality as part of its socialist ideology. Women were encouraged to enter the workforce, participate in politics, and receive higher education. The state provided support such as childcare and maternity leave, allowing women to balance careers and families. Universal suffrage was granted after the 1917 revolution and women were actively recruited into industrial, scientific and military sectors. Literacy rate raised significantly during this period. Women like Valentina Tereshkova, the first women in space, symbolized Soviet Progress.

The collapse of Soviet Union in 1991 brought both opportunities and challenges for women in Russia. The transition in market economy led to economic instability, affecting employment and social services. Many women turned to entrepreneurship and private sector jobs, leading to the rise to female-led businesses. Greater independence and more effective role has been given to women. Increased presence in corporate leadership and entrepreneurship has been witnessed. However single mothers have bear pressure due to market economy and lesser states welfare role. Despite these challenges, Russian women continued to excel in academia, science and the arts, gaining recognition both nationally and internationally.

In contemporary modern Russia, women are highly educated and actively participate in diverse professional fields, including business, medicine, law , and technology. The percentage of women in higher education surpasses of hat men, reflecting a shift towards intellectual and career-oriented aspiration. Women hold leadership position in major corporation. Increasing women representation has been witnessed in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Women entrepreneurship in increasingly growing and many notable women are running businesses in Russia. Because of women presence in entrepreneurship a healthy competitive atmosphere has been created which had a very positive impact on economy.

Traditional family values remain strong in Russian culture, with many women balancing professional careers and family life. Marriage and motherhood are still considered central aspects of a woman’s identity in Russia, though attitudes toward gender roles continue to evolve. More women are delaying marriages and prioritizing career advancement. Online communities and social media have provided platform for women’s advocacy.

From traditional caregivers to modern professionals, Russian women have played an essential role in shaping their society. While they continue to navigate cultural expectations and professional aspirations, their influence remains strong in all aspects of life. Whether in business, science, politics, or the arts, Russian women are breaking barriers and redefining success in contemporary society.

Russian women tend to contribute to the decision-making processes but actually do not participate directly in it. The proportion of female “specialists” involved in the preparation of information, documentation, accounting and maintenance in the political sphere is 88%. Russia has the 2nd place in the Ranking for Women Business Ownership . Nevertheless, women often manage a firm well until there are no more than 100-200 people in it

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova who was born in 1937 was the first woman to fly in space, having been selected from more than four-hundred applicants and five finalists to pilot the Vostok 6 mission on 16 June 1963. Before her recruitment as a cosmonaut, Tereshkova was a textile-factory assembly-worker and an amateur skydiver. To become a cosmonaut, Tereshkova was only honorarily inducted into the Soviet Air Force, and thus she also became the first civilian to fly in space. During her three-day mission, she performed various tests on herself to collect data on the female body’s reaction to spaceflight.

In a nut and shell women are integral part of modern Russia and they are actively participating in progress, development and prosperity of Russia and the nation is proud to have strong presence and participation of their women in Russian integrity, security and development.
