ISLAMABAD:Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, on Saturday paid tribute to the resilience, courage and contributions of women across the world on the occasion of International Women’s Day, stating that women remain the silent front-line in times of conflicts, crises and hardships.
In her message, she said women continue to play a vital role in strengthening families, communities and economies despite facing numerous social and economic challenges.
Senator Rubina Khalid said Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto laid the foundation for women’s leadership and empowerment in Pakistan and envisioned a society where women would be fully integrated into the national mainstream.
Highlighting the role of the Benazir Income Support Programme, she said BISP has emerged as the country’s largest social protection initiative, providing financial support, dignity and economic security to millions of women across Pakistan.
She said women registered under BISP have been recognized as heads of their households, a step that has strengthened their financial independence and decision-making role within families.
Rubina Khalid said President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari are carrying forward the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto by continuing efforts to safeguard and promote women’s rights in the country.
She emphasized that Pakistan’s progress and sustainable economic development are closely linked to women’s empowerment.
Although women constitute nearly half of the country’s population, their participation in economic activities remains comparatively low, she noted.
She stressed that providing education, skills and economic opportunities to women is essential for enabling them to contribute effectively to national development.
The BISP chairperson said the programme has become a strong pillar of social welfare and protection for women, enabling millions to achieve greater financial stability and dignity.
Senator Rubina Khalid urged society to renew its collective commitment to eliminating discrimination, ensuring equal opportunities and building a more inclusive and equitable society for women.
