ISLAMABAD:International Women’s Day will be observed across the world tomorrow (March 8) with renewed commitment to promoting gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political contributions of women.

This year’s theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” underscores the importance of increasing investment in women’s empowerment as a key driver of sustainable development and inclusive growth. The theme calls upon governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector to strengthen efforts aimed at improving women’s access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and leadership roles.

International Women’s Day has long served as a global platform to highlight both the achievements of women and the challenges that persist in achieving full gender equality. Despite progress in many areas, women in several parts of the world continue to face barriers in education, economic participation, political representation, and protection from violence and discrimination.

In Pakistan, government institutions, civil society organizations, educational institutions, and women’s rights groups are expected to organize a wide range of activities to mark the day.

These include seminars, policy dialogues, awareness walks, cultural programs, and conferences aimed at highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment and addressing issues affecting women’s rights.

Speakers at these events are likely to emphasize the need for comprehensive policies that promote women’s economic participation, support female entrepreneurship, and ensure equal opportunities in the workplace. Greater access to technical and vocational education, financial inclusion, and digital literacy for women are also expected to be key points of discussion.

The observance will also focus on addressing challenges such as gender-based violence, workplace discrimination, and limited representation of women in decision-making positions. Experts believe that investing in women not only strengthens families and communities but also contributes significantly to economic stability and national development.

International organizations have repeatedly highlighted that empowering women and girls plays a crucial role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to gender equality, poverty reduction, quality education, and economic growth.

As the world marks International Women’s Day, stakeholders are expected to renew their pledge to create a more equitable society where women and girls can fully realize their potential and contribute to building a more just and prosperous future.
