KARACHI:Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) police have carried out a joint operation against an alleged extortion network in Karachi’s Jamshed Town. One suspected member of the Samad Kathiawari group was killed in an exchange of fire, while two others were arrested in an injured condition.

The deceased was identified as Zohan alias Sanwal, while the arrested suspects were identified as Hassan alias Murghi Wala and Hussain alias Moni. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from their possession, according to the law enforcement authorities.

Investigators linked the suspects to two shooting incidents allegedly carried out over extortion demands. On October 2, gunmen opened fire at Memon Mall in Malir, killing security guard Ali Raza and injuring another guard. On October 28, another attack targeted a building under construction by Jumani Builders on Nishtar Road in Garden, leaving one labourer dead and two others injured.

Following the incidents, a joint team examined the crime scenes, reviewed CCTV footage and used intelligence sources to identify the alleged perpetrators. Acting on information about their presence near Bagh-e-Jinnah in Jamshed Town, the team conducted a raid. Authorities said the suspects opened fire, prompting a retaliatory response.

The two injured suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement in the Memon Mall attack and claimed they had acted on the instructions of Samad Kathiawari. They also reportedly disclosed that the group had been collecting information about businesses and buildings under construction to target them for extortion.

The suspects further alleged that a 9mm pistol and 50 rounds had been supplied to them through an unidentified associate for carrying out shootings. Raids are continuing to arrest other members of the alleged network.

According to Rangers, this is the third major joint operation against extortion groups since October 24, 2026.
