BURGENSTOCK, Switzerland:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised the Iranian leadership for handling the ongoing crisis with restraint and dignity and expressed hope for the success of ongoing diplomatic efforts for conflict resolution between the United States and Iran.
He emphasised that Pakistan remains committed to supporting dialogue, de-escalation and lasting peace in the region.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of high-level talks in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, the prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s key mediatory role alongside Qatar in the ongoing diplomatic process, aimed at advancing dialogue between Washington and Tehran and reducing regional tensions.
He said the Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf, have demonstrated a sincere commitment to de-escalation and peace.
“They have handled this entire crisis with a sense of dignity and have shown a genuine desire to de-escalate tensions,” the prime minister said, adding that he believed the Iranian leadership remained committed to promoting lasting peace and stability in the region.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said the current engagement presents an important opportunity to promote stability and open new avenues for cooperation among regional and international stakeholders. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and supporting the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Discussing Pakistan’s broader international engagement, Prime Minister Shehbaz also praised US President Donald Trump for his efforts to promote peace and strengthen ties with Pakistan, describing him as “a man of peace”.
The premier credited President Trump’s leadership with helping defuse tensions during the recent Pakistan-India conflict, saying his intervention came at a critical juncture when the two nuclear-armed neighbours were close to a dangerous escalation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said Trump’s “dynamic and courageous leadership” helped avert a wider conflict and welcomed recent remarks by US Vice President JD Vance expressing support for Pakistan, calling them an encouraging sign for the future of bilateral relations.
He also expressed appreciation for President Trump’s support for expanding economic cooperation between Pakistan and the United States, saying stronger engagement between Islamabad and Washington would usher in a new era of economic cooperation, counterterrorism coordination and regional stability.
The prime minister said enhanced Pakistan-US ties would benefit not only the people of both countries but also contribute to broader peace and prosperity across the region.
