ISLAMABAD:The Senate of Pakistan on Friday joined the global community in observing Earth Hour 2026, highlighting the need for joint efforts to tackle climate change and protect the environment.
Pakistan is among the countries most affected by climate change. Rising extreme weather events, rapidly melting glaciers, and worsening water shortages are creating serious challenges that require a strong, coordinated national response.
The Senate said these challenges demand better policies, stronger institutional responsibility, and active public involvement. It added that Earth Hour, although symbolic, reminds everyone of their shared duty to protect the planet.
The statement stressed the need to adopt sustainable lifestyles, use energy efficiently, and follow environmentally friendly practices in all sectors.
The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening laws and oversight to support environmental protection, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
It said efforts are being made to improve environmental governance, conserve natural resources, promote renewable energy, and protect ecosystems across the country.
It also noted that climate change is not only a national issue but a responsibility towards future generations. It requires close coordination between federal and provincial governments and the involvement of civil society, the private sector, and citizens.
On the occasion, Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani urged people to play their role in protecting the environment and work towards a cleaner and greener Pakistan.
He said the Senate remains committed to supporting policies that safeguard the environment and ensure a sustainable future for coming generations.
